5 Signs Your Danville Tree Needs Professional Attention
How to tell the difference between a tree that just needs trimming and one that’s genuinely a risk.
Most homeowners don’t think about their trees until something goes wrong — a branch comes down in a storm, or a trunk that looked fine last year suddenly doesn’t. The good news is that trees usually give warning signs well before they become a real problem. Here are five things worth walking outside and checking for right now, especially if it’s been a few years since anyone looked closely.
1. A Lean That Wasn’t There Before
A tree that’s always grown at an angle is often fine. A sudden or worsening lean, especially after heavy rain, usually means the root system is failing — that’s a same-week call, not a wait-and-see.
2. A Split or Cracked Trunk
A visible vertical crack running down the trunk means the structural integrity is compromised. These trees can fail without further warning, even on a calm day.
3. Hollow Sound at the Base
Tap the trunk near the ground with the back of a hammer. A dull, hollow thud instead of a solid crack often means decay has already hollowed out the interior, even if the bark looks fine.
4. Fungus Growing on or Near the Base
Mushrooms or shelf fungus growing directly out of the trunk or root flare is different from mushrooms scattered nearby in mulch — fungus growing from the wood itself usually signals internal decay.
5. Dead Branches in the Upper Canopy
A few dead twigs are normal. Multiple dead limbs in the upper canopy while the rest of the tree looks healthy can mean the root system or trunk isn’t supporting the tree the way it should.
None of these signs automatically mean a tree has to come down — but they’re worth a second opinion instead of waiting to see what happens in the next storm. If you’re seeing one or more of these on a tree near your house, driveway, or a spot you use often, it’s worth a free on-site look before deciding anything.
